Operation Open Heart

Every year since 2009 SCF has sponsored ALL Simbu children referred to Operation Open Heart (OOH) by SCF Doctors. A total of 25 children from 2009-2013 have been assisted. SCF funds their air fares and medical costs. SCF funds the airfares for a parent/guardian as well. SCF volunteers sponsor each child with spending money. In 2014 ten Bravehearts were sponsored by SCF to Operation Open Heart in Port Moresby.

We refer to our Operation Open Heart kids as “Brave Hearts”

Whilst in Port Moresby (POM) the local SCF members living in POM are encouraged to visit the kids and parents. They bring them ice cream, comics, toys, food and spend time with them. If allowed after their operation SCF families take the children and parents on day trips to the park and beach. Jimmy travels with the children and their parents and irons out any issues that arise. Sometimes the children have to travel to Lae for pre-operation tests the SCF members there including Unitech students and staff host the families. This network of support has raised many positive comments from hospital staff and other patients from other provinces who are not as well supported.

In 2014 SCF is raising funds for 10yo David James who has survived two heart surgeries with (OOH). This is it for David. He must have this operation and it can only be done overseas. We had a target of K100,000. We have raised K40,000. We acknowledge and thank all donors large or small. A special mention to Hon. Westly Nukundi Nukundj MP of Dei who donated K10,000 on behalf of his electorate for David’s return airfare to Brisbane. Another K60,000 to go. It will be done.

David will be the first child we have sponsored overseas for a medical operation. Thank you once again to all donors and our Patron for your efforts. Please visit our Facebook page for updates on David’s journey, operation and progress.
